Our body and our mind work together to make us the whole person that we are - physically, mentally and emotionally.
Our body language and our posture can be a representation of how we are feeling. And on the flip side of that, how we hold ourself and how we move can have an effect on how we feel.
For instance: let your self slouch forward, drop your head a little, make everything just that little bit smaller and lower towards the ground. Notice how you feel and how this has changed from a moment ago. Now crumple your face and turn the edges of your mouth downwards? I have asked you to make some physical changes in your position but I suspect that it has changed how you feel emotionally? It doesn't necessarily feel that great, right?
Now! Stand up and open your arms wide - really wide! Look up and turn the corners of your mouth up. Fully up so your cheeks lift too. Bet that feels different? Better?
So you see, we cannot separate our mind and body - they are intrinsically linked.
In body- mind coaching we can work with the body to help us to deal with difficult feelings in a way that 'just talking' cannot. We can develop new strategies and resources within ourselves to help us deal with situations that we may find challenging or even prefer to avoid altogether. By tuning into the body, we can develop our emotional and mental awareness and strength. Ultimately this can help us to enjoy living our life fully, relating to others and to situations in a healthy way with good self esteem.
Examples of where I have helped clients through body-mind coaching are:
- dealing with and managing stress
- managing and ultimately controlling panic attacks
- improving feelings about their body and relationship with food
- managing compulsive behaviours (e.g. self harm, binge eating, checking, compulsive exercise)
- regulating emotions and moods
I specialise in working with people who have, or have had, an eating disorder, helping them to regain a healthy relationship with their body and with exercise (for more specific information on this please go to my other website recover-ed.net).
A typical session will involve an initial chat to get a sense of how you are doing and what you would like to deal with that session. We may talk through a particular situation that is currently challenging you and how it is currently affecting you. From there we will start to get a sense of how you are reacting to it physically and how we can help you to change this. It may involve developing a breathing technique or it may involve us playing out a situation and how you manage your feelings to react in a positive way. We may work through a physical feeling that is uncomfortable for you in order to understand its positive intent and how you can integrate this more appropriately into your experience and actions going forward.
It is important that the person you do this type of work with is a good fit for you, so we will start with a conversation via telephone, Skype or zoom so that we can be certain that working together is best for you. If by any chance I am not for you then I can refer you to other practitioners who may be more your fit.
How many sessions we have together depends on what it is that you want to deal with and how much support you need from me. I do not believe in 'packages' or setting a specific number in advance as we don't know until we start to work together. You may only need to see me once or twice, or it may be for a period of time. I work in a way which means that I will support you to support yourself so that ultimately you are the judge of how often and for how long you need to see me.
Sessions are usually face to face, but can sometimes be arranged via Skype or zoom.

I provide coaching to anyone struggling with their self body image and relationship with food, including those with disordered eating. The coaching is based on a foundation of therapeutic NLP and mind/body connection tools. In addition I bring my own personal experience of recovering from a long term eating disorder and hating my body and food, and all the subsequent education and lessons that I learnt to be able to fully enjoy all that my body is and the food that I put in it.
Some strategies and behaviours that we play out, however distressing and unhelpful they may feel to us, made sense to us at one point, at an unconscious level. How we relate to our body and to food is the outcome of such strategies. But we all DO have the resources inside of us to built new strategies, meaning that you ARE NOT stuck with how things are for you now. Coaching is about bringing those resources to the surface and finding new, positive ways of relating to our body and to food and creating a more empowering life for ourself.
Our sessions may primarily involve talking, they may involve using some element of movement to help us to shift things. Usually it is a combination of the two. The most common approach is to starting with talking and using movement as and when it makes sense.
I work closely with counsellors and psychotherapists, meaning that I can refer if that becomes appropriate. I have my own regular sessions with my therapeutic supervisor ensuring that I have and maintain all the resources that I need to be able to help you.
While there is no average number of times that I see someone, I find that coaching tends to require several sessions. There is an element of getting to know the strategies that are being played out before we can replace them with more helpful ones. For this reason I offer both single sessions and blocks. The session rate remains the same (£50) but having a few sessions agreed can give us a time frame over which we can set realistic objectives and reflect back over. We will agree this together.
Sessions are generally around an hour, but I allow 1hr 15mins in my diary so that we are not rushed at the end of a session just because there is another client waiting. This gives us both a little breathing space.
Sessions take place at either:
Mulberry House, 21 Manor Place, Edinburgh, EH3 7DX
or
Edinburgh Gestalt Institute, 51 Lothian Road, Edinburgh, EH1 2DJ
I do not have set hours for my coaching practice, preferring instead to agree session times that work for both your diary and mine. Please contact me to discuss.

Individualised Coaching Sessions
Coaching is for anyone looking to make positive changes in their life. I specialise in helping people create and sustain a positive relationship with their body.
How we relate to our body, food, exercise and our own wellbeing is the outcome of behaviour patterns that we have learnt to play out over many years. But we all have the resources inside of us to build new patterns and you ARE NOT stuck with how things are for you now. Coaching is about bringing those resources to the surface and finding new, positive ways of being and behaving that build a more empowering life for you.
Coaching starts with where you are at now as the starting point and is generally more action based forward from that point. We may need to reflect back to some things from your past in order to move forward, but we are not looking to understand 'why'. We are more focused on 'how' to work forward from here.
My practice of coaching is based on a foundation of therapeutic NLP and mind/body connection tools.
Our sessions primarily involve talking and may also involve using some element of movement or mind / body connection to help us to shift things to where you want to be.

There is an element of getting to know the strategies that are being played out before we can replace them with more helpful ones. For this reason I offer both single sessions and blocks. The session rate remains the same (£65 per 1 hour session) but having a few sessions agreed can give us a time frame over which we can set realistic objectives and reflect back over.
