Exercise Therapy

Exercise Therapy is physical exercise that starts slowly, is monitored and then is gradually increased over time. It's like a very specialised type of personal training. This is often the starting point for those recovering from illness (physical or mental), dealing with a long term condition  or returning back to activities or sport after surgery or injury.

We look to find a level of activity which is manageable and appropriate for now and which we can then build upon accordingly and as consistently as is possible. We will look at what activities have been enjoyable in the past, or which are appealing to try now and will begin integrating those into a healthy whole lifestyle. The priority is carrying out activities that will improve wellbeing and enjoyment and then getting the best balance of when, how and what type for you.

For those returning to a specific sport or activity the priority is integrating it back in gradually and consistently giving the body time to re-adapt and cope.

Examples of where I have helped clients with Exercise therapy are:
- recovering from Chronic Fatigue
- returning to exercise after cancer, heart attack, stroke, hysterectomy, amputation, knee/hip replacement
- managing OCD, depression, anxiety
- returning to running, cycling, swimming after injury
- supporting mental wellbeing while in therapy
- finding appropriate levels of exercise for good health following recovery from eating disorder / compulsive exercise

Often with exercise therapy we will work for a period of time with each other, rather than taking it session by session, as I have found that it is often helpful to have some kind of goal or timeframe to aim towards. We need to be mindful of how your body (and mind) is reacting to each stage of progress and in the beginning I generally take on more of that a monitoring role until you become able to do that yourself.  How long we need to work together depends on where we are aiming to get to, where we are starting at and on your personality and support requirements.
