SC's, 27, story about her recovery from persistent pain flare ups and insomnia
“I first met Caroline in March 2020, after being recommended to her by a friend. Before meeting Caroline I had seen over 10 other therapists since summer 2019, in relation to a deeply debilitating back and pelvis issue and none of them had been able to help. I was really broken emotionally and physically when I first met Caroline after the long period of time I had been in pain for and not getting very far. After a long discussion we started some very gentle movement work and slowly over the course of 2020 my body has started to find itself again. Since seeing and working closely with Caroline, I have managed to return to some level of exercise (which was previously impossible due to pain levels), I can sleep through the night till the morning (was previously an insomniac due to pain levels) and can now go to work without bursting into tears halfway through the day. I still have the odd twinge and niggle but together we are working through the issues methodically and sometimes still can't believe the progress I have made. I can’t thank Caroline enough for helping to give me my quality of life back!”
SC had been running at a high level until beginning of 2019 and by the summer of 2019 was unable to run, and finding it difficult to walk for much more than half a mile. When she came to me she had given up on running and just wanted to be free of pain and able to sleep.
We started really small, seeing what she was able to do movement wise, and we create a short and very basic pilates based programme (about 10 minutes) that she could do to manage the pain and keep her body moving. Over a few sessions of adjusting this and gradually progressing we were able to see the pattern and understand how and why the pain had been cycling around in flares. After about 6 weeks she had a programme focused on building stability and strength that took her about 25 minutes, and which we systematically progressed as she got more able to do it. She also had a short pre-bed relaxation routine to help her sleep. After 12 weeks her pain was at such a low level compared to where it had been that we started talking about the possibility of running again and how we might go about that. I was so delighted to be with her for moral support when she went for her first run in 18 months, 4 month after first seeing me. From then SC has gone from strength to strength - is back running 4-5 times a week pain free, continues to do a short strength and plyometrics routine a couple of times a week and is considering returning back to competitive athletics.
All but 2 of our session were online.
